Working with a Staffing Agency | RMPersonnel | El Paso, Tx & Laredo, Tx

To explore whether working with a staffing agency is the right choice for you, here are 10 questions to help you choose a prospective staffing agency:

Does the staffing agency specialize in my field?

Office managers, receptionists and other administrative skills should seek a staffing agency that focuses on those skills.

Does the recruiter have industry-specific experience?

Ensure your recruiter and other members of the firm are tapped into the local community, and have established contacts and gained credibility in the industry.

What’s the recruiter’s typical process for placing candidates?

An experienced recruiter knows the nuances and challenges involved with locating qualified candidates and matching them with the employer who best meets their needs and lifestyle. A good recruiter makes the job seeker the number one priority.

How long has the staffing agency been in business?

Staffing is an intricate industry, and one doesn’t learn how to succeed in it overnight. Look for a reputable staffing agency that’s an established business. Ask around to friends and colleagues. Word-of-mouth is how good recruiters get most of their business.

How are you treated during the initial contact?

Were you greeted politely on the phone? What was the atmosphere in the office when you visited? Make sure the staffing agency and its workers are pleasant to deal with and knowledgeable.

Does the staffing agency fully understand your needs?

Are you a parent who wants to work a flexible schedule? Maybe you’re a recent college grad who wants to “try out” companies before committing to one. Or an experienced office manager seeking your next full-time position. Make sure the staffing agency has the types of jobs that will meet your lifestyle.

How many openings does the staffing agency currently have for the position you seek?

Will you have choices? Does the staffing agency have ten jobs that match your skills, or just one?

Does the staffing agency have jobs where you want to be?

A local presence is critical. Local businesses know other business owners in the area. There’s a higher likelihood that the staffing agency will have a variety of jobs at both large corporations and smaller businesses, which means more options for you.

How well run is the organization?

This will reflect the quality of help you receive. Call references. Ask how satisfied they were with the employees at the staffing agency as well as with the assignments they received, whether temporary or full-time.

What are your responsibilities for a potential position?

If the staffing agency has positions for you, review the basic job duties and objectives with your staffing manager.

What is Temp-to-Hire and Why You Should Consider It | RMPersonnel Laredo & El Paso, Tx

If you’ve been looking for work with a staffing service, you may have come across something called a temp-to-hire job.  Just exactly what is temp-to-hire, and why should you consider it?

In a temp-to-hire job, you work through an agency, which places you in a temporary assignment with a company.  If you do well in the assignment, you may be hired on as a permanent employee of the company.

But it is important to note that having a temp-to-hire position does not guarantee that you will be hired on as a permanent employee.  The company may decide that it really doesn’t need to fill the position, or that it needs to trim its expenses by cutting some jobs, for example.

But there are many good reasons to consider taking a temp-to-hire position.  One reason is networking.  When you sign on as a temporary, you get to meet many new people at the company where you are working, people who work in your area and who will get a chance to see your work.  If they like what you do, they will be able to refer you to other people.  You also get a chance to see what the job market is like in your area of expertise.

Another reason to take a temp-to-hire job is to give a boost to your self-confidence.  If you’ve been job hunting for a long period of time, you know how it can wear you down.  You’re getting rejection letters (or e-mails), and the experience may have been a disappointing one.  Taking the temp-to-hire job will remind you how good you are at what you do, and will help to rejuvenate your job search.

Also, temp-to-hire is an opportunity to help you build up your rèsumè.  As a temporary, you may get a chance to work in a new area and acquire new skills that you can then include on your rèsumè.  You may be able to strengthen your rèsumè where it’s less than stellar, learn a new technology or a new business method.

Temp-to-hire also is a good way to get your foot in the door.  As was mentioned, if you do well in the job, the odds are good that you will get hired to a permanent position.  If things don’t work out, there is little loss for company and for you, since it was only a temp position to begin with.  Your staffing manager will then work to find you another temporary, temp-to-hire or even direct-hire (where you’re hired on to a company’s payroll without working there on a temporary assignment first) assignment.

How Employment Agencies Work | RMPersonnel El Paso & Laredo

When it comes to employment, there are two sides of the story. Employers say, “Good help is hard to find,” while job-seekers think, “I can’t find a decent job out there.” No matter which side of the coin you’re on, finding good work and workers is a difficult process. If you’re hiring, one job opening could attract hundreds of applicants. Sifting through them to find a good fit is time consuming. On the other hand, a job hunter may feel like he or she is sending resumes into the black hole of the Internet, never to hear a response.

How can businesses and job hunters cut through the red tape of the hiring process? Many use an employment agency to alleviate the process. An employment agency is a firm hired by a company to help with its staffing needs. Employment agencies find people to fill all kinds of jobs, from temporary to full-time, in a number of career fields. Whether a company needs a nurse, an administrative assistant, a manager or a carpenter, an employment agency can find the right employee.

Both public and private employment agencies help place workers. In the United States, one of the major public employment agencies is the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. This agency provides job-seeking services and tools for workers through online resources and a network of offices around the country. It promotes public and private sector jobs by linking to national and state job banks.

Private employment agencies also help place workers, particularly in the private sector. These employment agencies tend to specialize in one of three fields:

personnel placement services

staffing services, also known as temporary help services

executive search firms

All told, these companies put millions of people to work every day. In fact, in the temporary and contract industry, over two million people are employed by staffing companies every business day, and staffing companies hire 8.6 million temporary and contract employees every year.

Can a Staffing Agency Meet Your Hiring Needs? | RMPersonnel | El Paso, Tx

Whether you’re putting together a new start-up or running a small business, there are a million things to do besides trying to find the right person to fill an open position. Even if you have an HR person, he or she is most likely responsible for handling payroll and benefits, in addition to hiring. When a job opening occurs, that HR person may need several days to go through dozens (or hundreds) of resumes before choosing a handful of potentially qualified candidates to pre-screen and interview.

Is it worth turning to a professional staffing agency to pick up the slack, so you can stay focused on your key business objectives?

Among the reasons to consider using the resources of a staffing agency:

Your business faces a special, time-sensitive project requiring more employees than you currently have in place.

Due to the nature of your business, you need additional staff for certain busy days each month.

A key employee quits unexpectedly, leaving a critical gap in your resources which must be addressed right away.

Here’s how an expert staffing agency can help:

Pre-employment qualifications. Think of the time and effort required to advertise for a position, review resumes, interview applicants, conduct skill assessments and handle all the other pre-employment procedures needed to find the right person. A qualified staffing agency can take care of all of this.

Pre-screening. A staffing agency also handles time-consuming drug tests and background checks.

Widespread coverage. If you’re in need of a specialized employee and there are slim pickings in your immediate region, a staffing agency can recruit experienced individuals elsewhere in the state or the country—someone your own limited HR person doesn’t have access to.

Flexible staffing. If your business is just starting out, you may not have a clear idea of what your employee needs are going to be. With a staffing agency, you can build a temporary team that helps you get a sense of what type of employees (and how many) you’ll need to move forward. Some of the temporary workers may well turn out to be outstanding candidates for permanent employment.

Whatever the situation, the staffing agency option means you can delegate the burdensome hiring process. At the same time, there are other considerations to keep in mind:

The cost factor. The better the staffing agency, the more expensive their services will be. If what they charge exceeds your budget, this may not be the best option for you.

The need for training. A new employee, however qualified in general, will have little understanding of the particular rules and policies your business follows. Time is still required to bring that person up to speed, in order to meet safety and other regulations.

Not the right fit. A temporary employee may have the skills and experience you’re looking for, but not necessarily the “right” personality for the job. Even the best staffing agency can’t guarantee a perfect fit.

Legal ramifications. Temporary staff must understand that they are exactly that—temporary. There’s no guarantee of full-time, permanent employment and access to the same benefits as regular employees. (It’s still your responsibility to see they’re treated the same as other staff.)

Safety concerns. The staffing agency isn’t necessarily responsible for providing specific safety training for a position where safety is a concern. The employer must ensure that this person gets the training needed, or face potentially serious legal consequences.

Used wisely, a staffing agency can handle the recruitment and selection process so you can remain fully committed to serving customers and building your business.

What is a PEO? (Professional Employer Organization) | RMPersonnel | El Paso, Tx

Unlike other HR outsourcing companies that provide only one or two quality services, a professional employer organization (PEO) offers a far more comprehensive approach to helping you manage your business’s human resources responsibilities. A PEO allows you to transfer the majority of your business’s cumbersome and time-consuming HR tasks to a dedicated team of HR specialists who are available to provide immediate guidance and recommendations for your specific needs.

It’s important to understand that PEOs are not temp firms, staffing agencies or payroll administration companies. Instead, most PEOs offer a comprehensive suite of HR services to their clients –- everything from recruiting services to benefits administration. Sometimes these services are offered as a bundle; sometimes they’re offered a la carte.

A reputable PEO offers a variety of professional HR and business services. Typically, when you join a PEO, it’s an opportunity for you to outsource the bulk of your responsibilities, including:

Employment administration

Government compliance management

Employee benefits

Workers’ compensation

Payroll and payroll tax administration

Recruiting and hiring

Policies and best practices

Performance management

Training and development

As a PEO client, you don’t have to devote your valuable time tracking payroll or negotiating rates with benefit providers. Nor do you have to hire additional staff to manage it for you.
