Spring Safety Tips/Yardwork Safety

April 1, 2008

More than 60,000 people are treated in emergency rooms each year for lawn-mower related injuries . Here are a few tips to keep in mind when doing yard work and using a lawn mower.

1. Limber up. Yardwork may seem easy, but you will be using muscles you probably haven’t used in a while.
2. Always use protective clothing and equipment when using pesticides and fertilizers.
3. Rake before you mow to prevent stones or loose debris from launching through the air.
4. Never operate the mower in your bare feet or while wearing loose clothing.
5. Never start a mower indoors.
6. When refueling your mower, allow the engine to cool first and NEVER refuel while smoking.
7. Never leave the mower running while unattended.
8. Do not use electrical mowers on wet grass.
9. Use proper eye protection.
10. Make sure blade guards are in place.
11. Store gasoline powered equipment away from anything that has a pilot light ( hot water heaters).
